2018 Social Media Trends. Yada. Yada. Yada
When you work in digital marketing, the first week of January means two things: planning and trend reports. And last week was no exception to that rule.
Last week, we spent a good chunk of time reading through different 2018 social media trend reports and reflecting on exactly what they were trying to tell us. While would could take this opportunity to compile our own 2018 trend report, we’re going to take a slight different approach to this.
Today is all about link sharing with a side of sharing “our two cents.” We read some great reports from some very reputable sources and we thought you could benefit from them.
Here we go…
What we ❤️ about this report:
This was one of the trend reports we could most get behind. We were most excited about the comments around AR because there is so much potential in this arena. When the big players like Apple start to make things like AR easier for developers to build for, that's where we start to see innovation.
"While augmented reality will have its initial impact on mobile gaming, it is likely that social media platforms will find ways to incorporate the new technology as well." (on augmented reality)
"Over 200 million people use Instagram Stories each month, which is over 50 million more than those who use Snapchat -- and Instagram Stories is just one year old! At this rate, nearly half of all Instagram users will be using Stories by the end of 2018." (on Instagram Stories)
"Over 90 percent of marketers who employ an influencer marketing strategy believe it is successful." (on influencer marketing)
What we loved about this report:
In true Sprout fashion, their team pulled together one of the most practical trend reports you'll see on the internet.
Sprout also identified that AR and Instagram Stories will take a front seat in 2018.
"If you can’t already tell, we have a major theme so far for our social media trends in 2018–taking care of customers. And our next trend follows that same idea by brands relying more on social listening tools." (on social listening tools)
"... 1 in 5 organic Instagram Stories from brands see at least one direct message from a consumer. That’s a huge potential for engagement through a somewhat new medium." (on Instagram Stories)
What we ❤️ about this report:
This report made some bold predictions. And by bold, we mean, QR code bold. And for this, we give it 👍🏼👍🏼. The reason we like this is because this report stepped away from the safe predictions and made us pause to think about the potential of QR codes making a "come-back." Do we think it'll happen? No, but it's fun to dream, right?!
"For years, companies’ organic reach on Facebook (the percentage of their followers who see company updates that aren’t “boosted” with ad money) has been dwindling, dipping as low as 2%. Now it seems Facebook may finally kill organic reach on the News Feed entirely. This fall, the network rolled out a new “Explore Feed,” a kind of second-class stream just for company updates. Testing has already begun in some countries to banish all company social posts from the all important (and increasingly crowded) News Feed over to Explore." (on free reach)
"Considering that QR codes are still one of the easiest ways to bridge the real world and the online one, don’t be surprised if you start seeing them everywhere in 2018—especially now that 700 million iPhone users have a scanner in their pockets." (on QR codes)
Of all the reports we read, AI was the theme that popped up over and over again but I think we can all agree, we still aren't quite sure what AI in the social media landscape is really going to look like. More filters? Gamification? 🤷♂️
